CSA Scholarships
At CSA we are passionate about providing opportunities for students to study, intern, and teach in China. CSA offer scholarships to our semester and 1 year program students. Whether you're learning Mandarin Chinese or taking a course on Martial Arts we want to make sure you can focus on your studies, free from distractions and our company was founded on rwo precepts: that the best way to learn Chinese is through immersion, and that coming to China should be fun and exciting, not difficult and stressful. We believe everyone deserves the fun and enriching experience of a study abroad program, but we know that not everyone can easily afford to travel to China. This is why every year we offer scholarships and grants to students who demonstrate either considerable need or noteworthy merit.
The CSA Diversity Scholarship (Merit Based):
The lack of diversity among people studying in China is not simply due to a lack of funding. While providing more scholarships increases the accessibility for many students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to study in China, we aim to increase the diversity among study abroad students. To be successful in this endeavor we must engage students in the process. That is why in addition to this scholarship we offer students the opportunity to take a China scholarship at CSA. The CSA Diversity Scholarship is awarded to students who have creative ideas about increasing the diversity of students travelling to China. If accepted, the applicant will receive a $1,000 USD scholarship to study in China, and will also intern in China, at CSA, as an integral part of our Diversity Committee. Applicants are asked to:
- Read our Commitment to Diversity and Community Outreach pages;
- Submit a 400 word essay or a short video to

Jullion Cooper
After four years speaking Catalan in Barcelona, Spain, Jullion started learning Chinese, but self-study only got him so far. Realizing the need to immerse himself in the language, Jullion applied for the CSA Summer Study and Travel program, combined with a homestay.
As the first recipient of CSA's Diversity Scholarship, Delaware native Jullion is blogging his experiences as a gay black man in a country that doesn't have many (openly) gays or blacks. This Johns Hopkins graduate student hopes to prove that the study abroad experience is for everyone.
'Katie' Jiyeong Lee
Jiyeong, or 'Katie' to her friends, studied Chinese Language and Literature in her hometown of Seoul, South Korea. Though she was able to study abroad in Philadelphia, USA, it was always a dream of hers to experience the "real" China.
Through a simple Google search Jiyeong found CSA and applied for a scholarship, which she out towards additional tuition and textbook expenses during her semester at Beijing Language and Culture University. Jiyeong now lives and works in Seoul, but she is counting down the days until her return to the Middle Kingdom!
Bethany Allen
Bethany's interest in Asia started at the age of 5 when she was in a production of the famous musical The King and I in her hometown of Orange County, California. After finishing her history degree, Bethany turned to CSA to make her dream to live and learn Chinese in China come true.
With the CSA scholarship, she was able to combine her year at Peking University with private 1-on-1 tutoring. Bethany continues to live in China and will soon be starting graduate school at the Johns Hopkins-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies - all coursework in Chinese!
Adam Moessinger
Adam was convinced he had to learn a second language after visiting his brother in India and watching him communicate with locals in Hindi. Though he was working as an English teacher in South Korea at the time, Adam decided to learn Mandarin Chinese for economic, geopolitical and environmental reasons.
Adam enrolled at Shanghai Jiaotong University, and with the CSA scholarship he was able to offset his losses from the declining exchange rate between the Korean won he was earning and the US dollar.
