Nanjing University
南京大学 Nánjīng dàxué, also known colloquially as 南大 Nándà
Nanjing University is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning in China, and a member of the Chinese C9 league of universities. Founded as a new school in 1902, Nanjing University has roots dating back to 258 AD when the Imperial Nanking University was established by Emperor Jing Wu under the Kingdom of Wu.
Through its many changes, including mergers with other schools and early adaptation of foreign learning standards and curriculum, Nanjing University was one of the first Chinese universities to embrace academic and cultural exchange with the West. During the 1920s, the school was known as the foremost “Oriental Education Centre” with many prominent educational figures from around the world, including the United States, Britain and Germany, visiting and instructing there.
In 1921, Nanjing University established a department of Western literature, the first of its kind in China and this has paved the way for the modern-day School of Foreign Studies, which annually hosts the largest number of students from the United States of any university in China.
Notable past attendees include Jiang Zemin (Former President of China), Xu Boyuan (founder of the Chinese central banking system) and Kwoh-Ting Li (the “Father of Taiwan’s Economic Miracle”).
