Xi'an Jiaotong University
西安交通大学 Xī'ān jiāotōng dàxué, also known colloquially as 西交大 Xījiāodà
Xi’an Jiaotong University's roots can be traced back to 1896, when Nanyang Public University was founded in Shanghai. Nanyang became Jiaotong in the 1920s, and in 1955 Jiaotong was split into two parts, one remaining in Shanghai (becoming the present-day Shanghai Jiaotong University), and the other established in Xi’an, in the west of China, to promote education in more remote areas and also to avoid possible bombings from the US Air Force and KMT in Taiwan.
As one of the oldest and most famous universities in China, Xi’an Jiaotong is one of the nine universities in the elite C9 league of Chinese institutions. Based on the Ministry of Education's academic assessment rankings, Xi'an Jiaotong is the top-ranked Chinese university in the disciplines of management science, business administration and power engineering.
In 2006, Xi’an Jiaotong, in partnership with the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom, opened a joint university in Suzhou (East China), the Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, an independent institution in its own right and the first Sino-British university to be approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Our two cents...
Xi’an Jiaotong is one of China’s top nine universities. It is a great school set in a city that is often referred to as the birthplace of China, and the country's historic centre. Students who have spent time in Xi’an often remark that living there you really get a sense of the history of China and where the country comes from. Xi’an is still relatively raw when compared to Beijing or Shanghai, so in many senses it is a more authentic Chinese experience, whilst still being a big city. You’ll still be able to find creature comforts that you miss from home, with Western restaurants, supermarkets and department stores aplenty, but you’ll never escape that you are studying and living in an ancient centre that still retains its original city walls, and is located a short distance from the world-famous Terracotta Army. For those who are looking to delve deep into Chinese history and culture (the best way to learn Chinese), Xi’an Jiaotong is the ideal choice.
