Nanjing Normal University (NJNU), on the threshold of its 100th anniversary, is one of the national key universities under the "211 Project" and is also a provincially renowned institution of higher learning. The history of Nanjing Normal University can be traced back to the "Sanjiang Normal Institute" established at the end of the Qing Dynasty, namely in the year 1902 by Zhang Zhidong, followed by "Liangjiang Normal Institute" and evolved into "Nanjing Higher Normal Institute" which embodies the maturity of Chinese higher normal education. In the year 1952, based on the nationwide adjustment of higher education, relative colleges and departments of Zhongyang University , Jingling University and Jingling Women's University integrated to form the Nanjing Normal College.

Nanjing Normal University is among one of the earliest universities authorized by the Ministry of Education to open up to the outside world. Since 1978, we have established ties of academic exchange and cooperation with 44 overseas universities and institute. 1275 teachers got the opportunity to go abroad to study, visit or in-service training. 5916 overseas students have studied or received in-service training at Nanjing Normal University .

The university provides a comprehensive range of mandarin language courses for all levels.

Nanjing Normal University comprises a wide range of disciplines such as the School of Liberal Arts, School of Journalism and Communications, School of Public Administration, Law School, Commercial School, School of Educational Science, School of Foreign Languages, School of Biological Science, School of Geographical Science, School of Music, Fine Art School  and etc., totaling 24 schools and departments as well as more than 50 research institutes here like the Institute of International Economics, Institute of Philology, Institute of Literature, Institute of Journalism and Communications, Institute of Educational Science, Institute of Moral Education, Institute of Mathematics, Institute of Environmental Science, Institute of Heredity Resources, Institute of Marine Produce, Institute of Musical Education. We also claim such national or provincial bases and training centers as UNESCO Rural Education Research and Training Center Nanjing Base, State Council Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs Chinese Language Education Base, Ministry of Education Social Science Key Research (Moral Research) Base, Ministry of Education Basic Education Curriculum Reform Nanjing Base, Jiangsu Provincial Teachers Training Center, Jiangsu Provincial Journalism Talents Training Center, Jiangsu Modern Educational Technology Training Center, Jiangsu Basic Education Demonstrational Web Training Center and Jiangsu Provincial Intellectual Property Talents Training Center.
