Northwestern University, located in the world-famous ancient Chinese capital Xi'an, is one of China's leading comprehensive universities. Founded in 1902, it is also one of the oldest institutions of learning in Northwest China. The college offers a wide range of mandarin language courses suitable for all levels.

Presently, the university has 11 colleges, 33 departments, 63 Bachelor's and Associate's programs. It's staff totals more than 2,300, of which more than 1,100 belong to the faculty including more than 600 full and associate professors. The faculty is distinguished by 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 63 Ph.D. student advisors, 32 National Experts with Outstanding Contributions and Provincial Experts with Outstanding Contributions. Its student population amounts to 18,000, including about 2000 Ph.D. and master students, and about 100 international students.

The university's total area amounts to 55 hectares and the total floor space of its buildings is 290,000 square meters. The university's library, recently rebuilt with a large donation from Sir Run Run Shaw, a Hong Kong---based patriotic celebrity, is the largest comprehensive library in Northwest China, having a total floor space of 15,000 square meters and a book collection of more than 2,200,000 volumes. The university also has a publishing house---Northwest University Press, an academic Periodical---Journal of Northwest university and an modern education technology center.

The university stresses international academic and personnel exchanges. Since the start of China's opening and reform in 1978, it has established cooperation and exchange relations with nearly 30 institutions of higher education of scientific research in the United states, Japan, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, and Hong Kong and Taiwan regions, received more than 5,000 visiting scholars and experts, enrolled over 1,000 international students, held more than 20 international academic conferences, and sent abroad more than 500 scholars to pursue advanced studies, give lectures, collaborate in scientific researches, or participate in international conferences. These exchanges have proved to be contributive to the rise of the university's academic level and international renown.
