Xi'an Jiaotong University

Xi’an Jiaotong University is one of the nine leading universities in China directly administered by the Ministry of Education. Xi’an Jiaotong University grew out of Nanyang College, which was founded in Shanghai in 1896. In 1921, it was given the name Jiaotong University. In 1956, the State Council decided to move the main part of Jiaotong University to Xi’an in order to restructure the higher education of China and to support the development of the Northwest region. In 1959, it was formally renamed as Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU). In 1999, it was selected and supported by the “21st Century Education Revitalization Project” as one of the nine universities in China and the only university in the Northwest region aiming to build world-famous research universities. In April 2000, with approval of the State Council, Xi’an Jiaotong University was merged with Xi’an Medical University and Shaanxi Institute of Finance and Economics to form the new Xi’an Jiaotong University.

At present, Xi’an Jiaotong University has developed into a comprehensive university covering natural science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, liberal arts and law, with engineering as its main focus. The University is organized into 21 schools, including: School of Sciences, School of Electronics and Information, School of Software, School of Electrical Engineering, School of Power and Energy Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Material Science and Engineering, School of Environment and Chemical Engineering, School of Life Science and Technology, School of Architectural Engineering Mechanics, School of Aeronautics and Aerospace, School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, School of Stomatology, School of Humanities and Social Science, School of Economics and Finance, School of Accounting, School of Management, School of Foreign Languages, School of Graduate, School of Net Education and Institute of Vocational, Technical and Continuous Education. In addition, there are 14 disciplines being enlisted in “Cheungkong Scholars Program”, 5 State Key Laboratories, 4 State Specialty Laboratories, one State Engineering Research Center, 20 Provincial and Ministerial Key Laboratories and 3 clinical teaching hospitals.

Language School & Program

The School of Chinese Language Study was founded in 1995. It is famous for a beautiful study environment, advanced teaching facilities, professional academic staff, diversified courses and effective teaching. There have been about 2,000 international students studying Chinese here from more than 30 countries since the school was established. After several years' improvement, the School of Chinese Language Study has become an independent school with a combination of Chinese teaching and culture education.

There are six different level Chinese classes. They are Preliminary A and B classes, Intermediate A and B classes, Advanced A and B classes. The students may choose one of them to study according to their Chinese level. The teachers will help them improve their Chinese ability gradually by adopting unique teaching methods, which focus on differences in studying Chinese vocabulary and pronunciation and so on. After one-year study in Preliminary Class, the students can acquire a command of 1500-2000 Chinese words and reach the first level required by HSK.
